Became South Africa's first black president. Mandela encouraged black South Africans to get past the previous hatred. There were a wide range of progressive social reforms during his presidency, Mandela and the government focused on dismantling apartheids legacy, cutting poverty, and inequality. Along with many new acts being introduced to better South Africa, three million peopel were connected to telephone lines, 1.5 million children introduced into the education system, 500 clinics were upgraded or constructed, 2 million people were connected to the electricity grid, 3 million people were able to get water access and 3 million people recieved houses.
