He retired from active politics in 1999 but kept a busy schedule raising money for the Mandela Foundation. He has published many books including No Easy Walk to Freedom, Nelson Mandela: The Struggle is my Life, and Nelson Mandela’s Favorite African Folktales. He was diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer in 2001. At the age of 85, he announced his formal retirement from public life and returned to his home Qunu with his current wife, Winnie Madikizela.
Mandela and a few others organized a group of world leaders to contribute their wisdom and leadership to address the world’s toughest problems. Mandela announced the formation of this new group. Mandela comments about this group “This group can speak freely and boldly, working both publicly and behind the scenes on whatever actions need to be taken. Together we will work to support courage where there is fear, foster agreement where there is conflict and inspire hope where there is despair.” Mandela’s primary commitment has been to fight against AIDS. He has done many speeches regarding AIDS and attempted to raise money and awareness. The Mandela Foundation is a foundation to raise money
for building schools and clinics in South Africa.
In 2010, Mandela made his last public appearance at the final match of the World Cup held in South Africa. He visited with First Lady Michelle Obama during her trip to South Africa in 2011. Though he did retire, Mandela continues to be a source of inspiration for many people regarding civil rights. He was briefly hospitalized in 2012 and underwent surgery for a stomach ailment. In December of 2012, Mandela, 94, was hospitalized for tests and medical treatment to a recurrent lung infection.
